COASTAL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

There is something incredibly peaceful about stepping away from your wedding celebration for a few quiet moments together.

The ceremony is over.

You’ve hugged your family, celebrated with your wedding party, and finally had a moment to realize:

We’re married.

For many of my couples, sunset portraits become one of the first opportunities they have to slow down and simply be together.

On St. George Island, those moments are made even more beautiful by the soft evening light and open coastline.

But when should sunset portraits actually happen?

The Best Time for Sunset Wedding Portraits

The most beautiful light often happens during the final portion of the day as the sun begins to lower.

Photographers commonly refer to this as golden hour.

However, I don’t schedule every couple’s portraits at an arbitrary time labeled “golden hour.”

I look at the actual sunset time for your wedding date.

From there, I consider your location, ceremony time, reception events, and the amount of time we’ll need to move between locations.

Your sunset portrait time should be intentionally planned around your wedding day.

Do We Have to Miss Our Reception?

No.

And I don’t want you to.

Your wedding photography should never make you feel as though you missed your own celebration.

In many cases, I recommend stepping outside for a short portrait session as the light begins to soften.

We may spend 15 to 20 minutes together before returning to your reception.

Those few minutes can create some of the most beautiful photographs in your wedding gallery without pulling you away from your guests for an extended amount of time.

Why I Love Sunset Portraits for Coastal Weddings

Beach light changes quickly.

What looks bright and vibrant earlier in the afternoon can become soft, romantic, and almost pastel as the day comes to an end.

The water reflects the sky.

The sand becomes softer in tone.

And the harsh shadows of midday begin to disappear.

But beyond the light, I love what sunset portraits give my couples emotionally.

A Quiet Moment Together

Wedding days move quickly.

Sunset portraits give you permission to step away from the noise and spend a few uninterrupted moments together.

Natural, Relaxed Photographs

My approach to portraits is intentional without feeling overly posed.

I’ll guide you when you need direction while also creating space for genuine interaction.

Walk together.

Hold onto each other.

Laugh.

Take in the fact that you’re finally married.

Those are the moments I want to preserve.

What If the Sunset Isn’t Dramatic?

You do not need a bright orange sky to create beautiful wedding photographs.

Some of my favorite coastal photographs have been created under soft clouds, hazy skies, and changing Florida weather.

Beautiful photography is about understanding light—not simply waiting for a dramatic sunset.

The coastal atmosphere can create something completely different every evening.

My job is to recognize the beauty in the conditions we’re given and photograph your story within them.
