Engagement Sessions 101: What to Wear, Where to Go, and What to Expect | By a Tallahassee Wedding Photographer

Your engagement session isn’t just a warm-up for the big day — it’s a celebration of this once-in-a-lifetime season in your relationship. It’s also a great way for us to get to know each other, help you feel comfortable in front of the camera, and create beautiful, relaxed images that reflect your personalities.

As a Tallahassee wedding photographer, I’ve worked with dozens of couples across North Florida and the Gulf Coast — and I’m here to help you feel totally confident and prepared.

Here’s everything you need to know:

What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos

What you wear affects not only how you look, but also how you feel during your session. You want to look like you, but with a little extra polish.

✅ DO:

  • Stick with neutrals or soft tones: Beige, ivory, light blue, soft pinks, olive, and navy always photograph beautifully.

  • Choose movement-friendly fabrics: Dresses that flow, loose linen shirts, and light layering pieces give your photos life.

  • Coordinate, don’t match: Think “same vibe,” not “same outfit.” Blend colors and styles in a way that feels cohesive.

  • Bring two outfits: One casual and one dressy is a great way to add variety to your gallery.

🚫 AVOID:

  • Logos, heavy patterns, or neon colors

  • Uncomfortable shoes (especially if we’re walking on trails or sand)

  • Overly trendy outfits that don’t feel like “you”

Bonus Tip: If you’re doing your makeup professionally for the wedding, consider booking your trial on the same day as your session!

Where to Take Engagement Photos in and Around Tallahassee

We’re lucky to have some seriously stunning engagement locations here in North Florida — from historic gardens to modern architecture and quiet forest trails.

Here are a few of my favorite spots:

🌿 Maclay Gardens State Park

A local favorite for its seasonal blooms, brick walkways, and peaceful lake views. It’s perfect for timeless, romantic sessions.

🏛️ Florida State University Campus

Ideal for FSU alumni! Iconic backdrops like Westcott Fountain, Landis Green, and Dodd Hall make it both meaningful and beautiful.

🌳 Elinor Klapp-Phipps Park

A more woodsy and natural vibe — tall pines, winding trails, and a golden-hour glow make this spot perfect for laid-back couples.

🏙️ Downtown Tallahassee

Want a more urban feel? We can explore the city’s textured walls, quiet alleyways, and skyline views.

🏖️ Bonus: 30A Beaches

If you’re up for a short drive, locations like Rosemary Beach and Seaside offer pristine sand, white architecture, and dreamy sunset skies.

What to Expect from the Session

Every engagement session is relaxed and easy-going. You don’t need to know how to pose — that’s my job.

Here’s how it goes:

  1. We meet at the agreed location, usually about 90 minutes before sunset (hello, golden hour).

  2. I’ll guide you through simple, natural movement — walking, holding hands, laughing, cuddling.

  3. We’ll keep things light and fun, and I’ll give you just enough direction to feel confident, not stiff.

  4. If you bring two outfits, we’ll do a quick change halfway through.

  5. Sessions typically last 60–90 minutes.

Within a few weeks, you’ll receive a fully edited gallery you can use for your save-the-dates, wedding website, social media, and prints.

Final Tips

  • Don’t stress! The goal is not to be perfect — it’s to be authentic.

  • Treat your session like a date. Grab dinner after. Make a memory out of it.

  • Bring water, a change of shoes, and any props that feel personal (picnic blanket, champagne, your pup, etc.)
