The Ultimate Tallahassee Wedding Planning Timeline (With Photography Tips)

Planning a wedding is exciting — but it can also feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to juggle all the moving parts. From booking vendors to planning portraits and navigating Florida’s unpredictable weather, there’s a lot to consider.

As a Tallahassee wedding photographer, I’ve worked with dozens of couples across North Florida and South Georgia. I’ve seen firsthand what works (and what causes stress!) when it comes to timelines. That’s why I created this comprehensive wedding planning timeline — filled with realistic milestones, photography tips, and advice tailored specifically for Tallahassee weddings.

Let’s break it all down — month by month — so you can feel confident every step of the way.

📅 12+ Months Out — Dream & Book the Big Stuff

✨ What to Do:

  • Set your budget

  • Start your guest list

  • Book your venue

  • Hire a wedding planner (if you’re using one)

  • Lock in your photographer and videographer

📸 Photography Tip:

Your photographer and venue will shape much of your wedding experience. Booking early gives you more flexibility for dates and more time to plan together. If you’re drawn to natural light or dreamy garden portraits, mention this early — some venues (like Maclay Gardens or South Eden Plantation) shine at certain times of year!

📅 9–11 Months Out — Engagement Photos & Creative Vendors

✨ What to Do:

  • Take engagement photos

  • Book your florist, caterer, and entertainment

  • Shop for your wedding dress and attire

  • Send Save the Dates if your wedding is a destination or holiday weekend

📸 Photography Tip:

Tallahassee is FULL of beautiful spots for engagement sessions — think FSU campus, Lake Ella, downtown, or Maclay Gardens in bloom. I always recommend golden hour for the softest, most flattering light.

Bonus tip: Engagement sessions are a great trial run to get comfortable in front of the camera.

📅 6–8 Months Out — Design Details & Timeline Planning

✨ What to Do:

  • Finalize decor ideas and start DIY projects

  • Plan your ceremony structure and start writing vows (if personal)

  • Choose your first look or aisle reveal (more on that here)

  • Build your photography timeline

📸 Photography Tip:

This is when we’ll have a timeline consult to plan lighting for portraits, sunset photos, and any special moments you want captured. We’ll also decide:

  • When to take family and bridal party portraits

  • Where to do your first look (if you’re doing one)

  • How to structure sunset portraits or a private last dance

In Tallahassee, sunset shifts depending on the season — and it can get hot FAST in spring/summer — so timing is key!

4–5 Months Out — Details & Day-Of Prep

✨ What to Do:

  • Schedule your hair and makeup trial

  • Send your invitations

  • Confirm vendor arrival times

  • Purchase your day-of accessories (shoes, jewelry, veil, etc.)

📸 Photography Tip:

Your detail photos (rings, flat lays, invitations, perfume, etc.) are taken early in the day. Start gathering those items in a box now — it’ll save time later! I also love styling with local florals or heirloom items to personalize your gallery.

✨ What to Do:

  • Create your shot list for family formals

  • Build a rain plan if you’re having an outdoor ceremony (it’s Florida, after all!)

  • Schedule your final venue walkthrough

  • Finalize ceremony timing with your officiant

📸 Photography Tip:

Don’t overthink your shot list — we’ll work together to make sure we capture the moments and people that matter most. If you’re planning a sparkler exit, sunset toast, or private vow exchange, let your photographer know now so we can factor it into the timeline.

📅 1 Month Out — Final Details

✨ What to Do:

  • Confirm final headcount

  • Share the timeline with your wedding party and vendors

  • Prep your wedding emergency kit

  • Book a photo-friendly getting ready space (big windows, neutral walls, tidy space!)

📸 Photography Tip:

Natural light makes a world of difference for getting-ready photos. If possible, choose a hotel room, Airbnb, or bridal suite with great window light and minimal clutter.

📅 1 Week Out — Breathe & Be Present

✨ What to Do:

  • Pack everything (details box, marriage license, accessories)

  • Assign someone to be your photo contact for family (so we can round them up quickly)

  • Touch base with your photographer one last time if needed

📸 Photography Tip:

This is the week to trust your team. You’ve done the work — now it’s time to show up, be present, and enjoy every second.

Wedding Day — Let It Flow

✨ What Happens:

You marry your favorite person. You dance. You laugh. You cry.
And I’ll be there — camera in hand — capturing it all with calm, unobtrusive joy.

Final Thoughts

Planning your Tallahassee wedding doesn’t have to feel overwhelming — especially when you have the right people by your side. I love helping couples build a photography timeline that supports your vision while making space for real, candid moments.

From garden ceremonies to historic estates, I’ve photographed weddings across Tallahassee, Thomasville, and 30A, and I’d be honored to help tell your story next.
