What to Ask Your Wedding Photographer: 12 Questions Tallahassee Couples Shouldn’t Skip

So you’ve found a few photographers whose work you love — great! Now comes the part that matters even more: making sure they’re the right fit to document one of the most meaningful days of your life.
As a Tallahassee wedding photographer, I always tell couples: your photos are the one thing you’ll keep forever. That means finding someone whose personality, process, and style align with yours is just as important as loving their Instagram grid.
To help you choose with confidence, here are 12 smart questions every Tallahassee couple should ask before booking their wedding photographer — and why each one matters.
1. How would you describe your photography style?
Do you love light and airy? Rich and moody? Classic and clean?
This question helps you understand how they shoot and whether their editing style matches your vision. Bonus points if they can show you a full gallery that reflects it.
My photography style is classic, romantic, emotional and has a touch of light and airy to the photos. I absolutely love black and white photos too. If you want to see full galleries, just ask! I love showing potential clients my full galleries! My goal for my photos is to keep them looking as timeless as possible so that when you are showing your kids and grandkids your photos, they are still just as beautiful.

2. Have you photographed weddings in Tallahassee (or at my venue)?
Local experience matters more than you think.
A photographer who knows your venue — whether it’s Goodwood Museum, Maclay Gardens, The Retreat at Bradley’s Pond, or South Eden Plantation — will know the best spots, light patterns, and weather quirks specific to North Florida.
Tallahassee is a small town and I have been photographing weddings for 12 years now! I have worked at every venue in the north Florida and south Georgia area! I have my favorites that I work weddings at often but chances are I most likely have experience at your venue.
3. Will you be the one photographing my wedding?
If you’re working with a larger studio or collective, this question helps clarify whether the person you’re meeting with will actually be the one behind the camera on your big day.
At Taylord Southern Events, I am the lead wedding photographer (Lauren Taylor). Sometimes I have assistants come with me to weddings to help. But I will always be the main photographer for all weddings.
4. Can I see a full wedding gallery from start to finish?
Instagram highlights are curated. What you want is to see how they photograph a whole wedding — from getting ready to the last dance. Look for consistency, storytelling, and emotion throughout.
This is such an important question to ask! And please ask for more than one full gallery. If it were me, I would want to see 5+ full galleries to ensure they have experience and that there is consistency across all the galleries. I love sharing full galleries with anyone who ask!
5. How do you handle the timeline on the wedding day?
A good photographer does more than take pictures — they help keep the day on track. Ask if they’ll assist with timeline planning, how much time they recommend for portraits, and what their approach is if things run behind.
(Pro tip: In Tallahassee, lighting and weather change fast — experience helps us adjust without missing a beat.)
I work with all of my clients to build out the perfect wedding day timeline! Usually 30-45 days out, we schedule a wedding timeline phone call and we go into depth about all the details to the wedding day. I help create a detailed timeline that covers the entire day and also focuses on everything photography related.
6. Do you work with a second shooter?
Second shooters can be super helpful for capturing different angles, reaction shots, and simultaneous moments (like the couple getting ready in different places). Ask if this is included or an add-on.
My middle tier and top tier packages include a second shooter. I love having a second shooter at the wedding not only for the benefits of capturing different angles, etc. But it is also great to have another photographer just incase something unexpected happens, there will always be an extra photographer to continue photographing the wedding!
7. What do you do if it rains?
This is especially important for Florida couples!
Your photographer should have a backup plan for portraits (covered spaces, umbrellas, alternative lighting) and know how to adapt quickly if the weather changes last minute.
I have had so many weddings get rained out in Florida! This is such a common occurance and I highly recommend you have a rainy day backup plan! This is so common, that I have created a blog post all about rain on your wedding day. Feel free to check it out for all the details.

Also, these photos below were taken while raining! If you look closely, you can see the rain drops in the background. Rain doesn’t stop me one bit!

8. What’s included in your wedding photography packages?
Ask about:
-
Hours of coverage
-
Number of photographers
-
Engagement session
-
Delivery timeline
-
Travel fees (especially if your venue is outside Tallahassee)
-
Albums, prints, and image rights
Compare what’s included across packages, not just the price. Also please compare their experience and years in the business. The cheapest option is never the best option.
9. How long after the wedding will we receive our photos?
Most photographers deliver final galleries within 4–12 weeks, depending on the season. You can also ask if they send sneak peeks in the days right after your wedding (a nice bonus when you’re still glowing!).
I try to deliver final galleries as quickly as possible because I understand the anticipation! My goal is always 2-3 weeks. But I do have small children at home and life can happen so a worst case scenario for me is 4-5 weeks. I have heard of photographers taking 12 weeks or longer to deliver photos and that would never happen with me.
10. How do you back up and protect our photos?
This is one of the most underrated questions. A true pro should have a system that includes dual card backups during the wedding, cloud storage, and multiple file backups — your memories deserve it.
This is such an important question to ask! My camera photographs on two cards at all times so I always have a backup of every photo I take just in case one of my cards becomes corrupt and doesn’t work. As soon as I get home, I back up all the photos onto an external hard drive and then that hard drive is backed up onto cloud storage. So within 24 hours of your wedding, I have 4 copies of your photos stored. Freak accidents happen and wedding photos are lost forever while still in the hands of the photographer. Make sure the photographer you choose is well educated in weddings and has all the appropriate measures in place!
11. What’s your booking process?
Understanding how to reserve your date (retainer, contract, payment schedule, etc.) will help you plan with confidence and avoid any surprises.
My booking process is simple. You inquire, I send you my pricing guide, we chat about your wedding, if you decide we are a great fit and you want to book me as your wedding photographer then I sent a contract that you sign, you pay a 25% retainer then the remaining balance is split evenly into three additional payments spread out over the course of the wedding planning period. The final payment is due 30 days before the wedding.
12. What do you love most about photographing weddings?
This one might seem a little “extra,” but it tells you a lot.
Are they in it for the posed photos, or do they light up when they talk about real moments — a parent’s tears, the nervous laughter, the quiet in-between?
You want someone who connects with the why behind your day, not just the aesthetics.
What I love most about weddings is the love between the couple. I get goosebumps and butterflies during every wedding ceremony. I shed a tear or two when I watch the couple share their own vows with one another because it is the sweetest moment hearing them confess their love for one another. The feeling always takes me back to my own wedding day. There is so much love and joy on a wedding day and it’s the best part about photographing weddings!
